Painted staircases - stairs are no longer just stairs

Painted Staircases

Royal Interior Wood Stain - Shop Now

Stairs are no longer just a way to get upstairs and go to bed. Now they are a design statement in their own right. Every part of the humble staircase has had a makeover, from the steps to the spindles to the bannisters.

Previously the choice was white or wood. Well not any more. They have had a serious colour update. Greys, blacks and even pinks adorn them. Who would have thought staircases would receive so much love?!

Having decided to attempt some DIY, and after choosing your colour scheme, the next decision is what paint to use.

Our paint suggestion would be Royal Interior superior wood finish. This long lasting, hard wearing and highly waterproof wood paint will keep looking good and protected, whatever you do on your stairs!

Those grubby fingerprints on your white bannister could be a thing of the past with a green or navy redo.  So if your stairs need a modern update, or your Victorian staircase has a bannister and railings that are looking sorry for themselves, then look no further.

With over 64 colours you should have no problem matching to a ‘runner’ should you decide to have one. That is another minefield but that's a tale for another time.

Why not order some sample pots today and see what you could do.

If you are doing a staircase make over please share with us #loveprotek we would love to see how creative you all are and of course share across our social channels.

Moroccan Inspired Garden

Log Cabin Living

With the change in the season comes the change in temperatures and cooler nights but we are not ready to hide inside ……yet!

That’s why we were excited by the Love Your Garden Episode 9 2017 when Alan Titchmarsh and his team created a Moroccan inspired garden in Nottingham. The garden was a surprise for an inspirational boxing coach Marcellus Baz.

Our highlights were; the use of terracotta on the paths (there is something warming about terracotta), the seating area covered in a random selection of coloured tiles, a water feature and centre stage the fire pit. A great space to sit, chat and sip mint tea and maybe toast the odd marshmallow or two! In fact we were so inspired we bought our own!!

The fences were painted with a selection of our paints from Royal Exterior and Wood Stain and Protect. From Royal Exterior Iris Blue, Black, Saffron, Eggshell Blue and Somerset Blue were used and from Wood Stain and Protect Ethnic Red, Biscuit and Bristol Blue.

The striking colours definitely brightened up an ordinary garden.

Log Cabin Living

We have been totally inspired by all of the garden projects that have been going on over lock down. We particularly love this cosy cabin created by Lily Sawyers Interiors of Instagram @layered_home.

Lily used Timber Eco Shield Black outside to protect the wood from the elements.  Inside she used Royal Exterior Anthracite Grey and Midnight Blue inside.

The cabin has been used as a summerhouse, a staycation venue and a cinema.

Thank you for sharing.

Quick and Easy Easter Homemade Gift

Quick Easter homemade gift in Wood PaintWe were looking for something different to paint for Easter, not just the usual egg shapes, and found an adorable fairy door with bunny ears at The Wooden Shape Company www.thewoodenshapecompany.com. It’s made out of smooth plywood and came with a variety of little accessories.

We chose pastel ice cream shades from our Royal range as the base and added a little bling with Gold from the Metallics range. The fairy door came in sections (outer edge, window frame etc), which made it much easier to paint. We did use a small artist brush to keep it neat and make sure we could do all the fine details. Little preparation was needed as the door was already smooth (no sanding needed!), just put old newspaper or similar underneath to catch any drips or spills. To give an even finish we paint two coats, allowing the first to dry before applying the second. The colours we used were: main door Eggshell Blue, out edge Ice Blue, window frame French Lilac, inner ears and heart Lemon Yellow, bunny and door knocker Metallic Gold.

Once it was all dry we stuck the parts together using wood glue, but you could probably use any glue that would dry clear. Don’t put too much on or it will ooze out around the edges when pressed together. If you do put too much on, wipe away any excess with a cloth before it dries.

Easy Laundry Basket Upcycle

Laundry basket beforeLaundry Basket UpcycleRoyal Metallics Wood Stain - BronzeRoyal Exterior - Cashmere

When we started the laundry basket make-over we couldn’t quite decide what colour to paint it; whether to be bold and brave and paint it a strong colour, or choose a more neutral, go with anything shade. We were bold with the first choice of Royal Heritage Blue, but then decided we could do both!  To give a quick new look to our laundry basket, we went with Royal Cashmere, a luxurious neutral tone that would go with the Royal Metallics Bronze already used as a highlight colour.

We painted straight over the top of the Royal Heritage Blue with the Royal Cashmere and because of it’s great formulation, it only needed two coats to cover the Heritage Blue. As before, make sure you prepare well; put a dust sheet or old newspaper down, tape any edges if you’re not very confident with getting a straight line and wait for the first coat to dry before applying the next.

Easy Garden Furniture Revamp

A set of untreated hardwood sun loungers was suffering from weathering, UV fade and algae growth. This once attractive and expensive set of furniture had become an eyesore and was in desperate need of some love and attention.

The timber was stripped back using an industrial powered pressure washer then the remaining algae killed and re- moved by painting on a solution of water and bleach. Once dry the timber was ready for a protective wood stain to be applied.

Royal Exterior in Hazelnut was applied to leave a superbly rich colour with a natural looking finish that allows grain to shine. Some elbow grease and two coats of Royal Exterior was all that was needed to transform this set of sun loungers in to beautiful pieces of furniture that set the scene for partying, picnicing, relaxation and fun.

The hard-wearing, attractive water-repellent coating is set to protect the loungers for many years of enjoyment.

Upcycle your laundry basket it's super easy

Laundry basket beforeLaundry Basket UpcycleRoyal Metallics Wood Stain - BronzeRoyal Exterior - Heritage BlueChristmas is a fading memory. It’s dark, wet and cold outside and most people are still in winter hibernation, longing for Spring to arrive. Whilst you’re waiting for the warmth and sunshine of the brighter days ahead, why not put your time to good use and re-vamp something from around your house. We found a tired and slightly battered wicker laundry basket, which had definitely seen better days, but rather than consigning it landfill, we decided to give it a make-over.

Laundry basket with masking tapeWe started by removing the fabric liner and giving it a good brush to remove any dust and loose fibers. To make sure the paint takes to the surface you are painting, it may be necessary to key the surface with some sandpaper. Most of our laundry basket was OK, but the bamboo edging was very smooth and shiny, so we gave it a quick sand with some 80 grit paper. Once you have finished any sanding, brush it down again and wipe it with a damp cloth to remove any fine particles. Leave to dry before starting to paint. To add some extra interest to our basket, we used two colours, Royal Heritage Blue and Royal Metallics Bronze. If you are going to paint different colours, it’s best to separate off the areas using masking tape. This should make it easier to paint and also help prevent bleeding of the colours. We wanted to paint a stripe around the middle, so measured the same distance from the top and bottom of the basket (20cm in this case)

Prep for laundry basket upcycle

and marked it with a marker pen. As we were painting the main colour, Heritage Blue, first we put the masking tape along the edge where the blue will finish (covering the area where the Bronze will be). Do this all the way around the item and smooth it down so the paint doesn’t leak underneath. As the basket is wicker, we weren’t going to get a perfect line, but it can be amended by eye as you go along. Make sure you put down some old newspaper or a dust sheet under the item you are painting to prevent any unwanted paint transfer and splashes.

Heritage Blue and BronzeOnce all the preparation has been done, you can start painting. The brush we used had synthetic bristles, as this works best with our water based paints. Don’t choose one that is too big, as you’ll find it harder to cut in along any edges. Work your way around the item, being careful not to smudge any wet paint as you go. The first coat will act as a base layer and depending on the item’s original coating, it may not cover completely in one go. Leave this first coat to dry, and then apply another. Two coats are usually sufficient, but if necessary apply a third. Once all the coats are dry, you can carefully remove the masking tape. If you feel confident enough, it may not be necessary to apply another line of masking tape for the second colour. The Heritage Blue gave a good, clean edge, so we didn’t apply any more masking tape to the basket. Apply the second colour in the same way as the first, being careful where the colours join. As the bronze was a similar colour to the natural wicker, we found that one coat was sufficient to cover it.

Make sure your item is completely dry before moving it to it’s final position !

How to transform your old garden furniture! Teak table and chairs

Upcycling garden furniture using wood stains and paints - BeforeRoyal Exterior - WalnutMy teak garden furniture table and chairs set had never been treated with anything and after more than 10 years of exposure to rain, sun and general muck they were looking dirty, tired and old. Firstly we cleaned them using a power washer to strip off all of the dirt and algae then left to dry fully. ower washers are very effective at blasting off dirt and old coatings but they also create furring and splinters on the timber. When the timber is fully dry a light sand is required to remove splinters and create a good surface to paint on to. I couldn’t decide between colours so applied the two choices from sample tins to a strip underneath the chair s where it wouldn’t notice. This meant that if I had decided to go with the lighter Hazelnut shade the darker Walnut stain wouldn’t show through.

All 4 chairs, the table top and legs were given a light sand. It was a cold wet winter so all of it was brought inside a garage for treatment. Being teak (hardwood) I used Royal Exterior as it is designed for hardwood and is best suited for use on garden furniture. I chose the Walnut wood stain as felt it better suited the darker original hardwood and I loved the colour! After only 1 coat of Royal Exterior wood stain there is a gorgeous golden wood tone to the table top. You can just apply one coat of a coloured wood stain and use one to two coats of Royal Exterior Clear to protect the coloured coating and provide full water-repellency and protection against the elements. The chairs were turned upside down to ensure that the Royal treatment was applied to all parts of the timber sealing it against moisture penetration.

Upcycling garden furniture using wood stains and paints - teak

After 2 coats were applied you can still see the wood grain showing through. The Walnut colour looks rich and beautiful with a warm golden tone and my very old garden furniture is transformed in to a beautiful set that looks brand new again and will last for many more years! And now time to put it back in the garden to enjoy using it again and look forward to the warm summer months where the mug of tea and garden tools can be replaced by an evening meal and nice glass of wine!
