How to paint a fence

How to paint your fence

A simple and yet very effective way to give your garden a revamp is to paint the fences. You can go down the traditional wood stain brown route or try some of our beautiful colours. From off-whites to dark greys, olive greens to heritage blues, and not forgetting the grand statement of painting them black. We have been supplying ITV’s Love Your Garden for twelve series now, and our wood stains and paints are the go-to products for creating that instant new look.

See below for how easy it is to paint or stain your fence!

How to paint your fence - choose colours

Choose a colour

Decide if you would like a natural wood look or a sleek painted finish. Will a dark or light colour work best in your garden as a backdrop to your plants? Darker colours make your garden look larger and light colours are good at brightening smaller more enclosed spaces. Sample pots are very helpful in making the right decision.

Wood can be all different colours and textures, and this can really have an effect on how the wood stain or paint will finally look.  You may have an old fence that is already treated and want to change the colour, or you have a mixture of some old and some new fence panels that you want to tie-in so they all look uniform.

How to paint your fence - clean

Do the preparation

Make sure your fence is clean and dry before painting and remove all algae; a stiff bristle brush normally does the job. No need to apply additional primers or sealants on fences if you use a paint or stain designed for the job. Cover and protect the ground and your plants with a dust sheet before starting. If you are spraying, make sure nothing can be sprayed by mistake!

How to paint your fence - spray or brush

The application

You can use a brush, roller, or a garden sprayer, depending on how many panels you must paint! Stir the product well before use. If only part of a tin is required, decant the amount required into a separate vessel so you do not contaminate the paint you want to save. Two coats of paint are always better than one, and always allow each coat to dry before applying the next. Wear suitable clothing, safety glasses and gloves, especially if spraying.

How to paint your fence - clean up

Clean up

If splashes or drips occur, clean up quickly with warm soapy water and while still wet. Always clean brushes, rollers, and sprayers immediately after use. All Protek containers are fully recyclable, so please recycle after use.
