Chicken friendly wood stains and paints

This hen house from Flytes So Fancy is painted in our Royal Exterior Olive Green and Pale Pistachio

Are you one of the growing number of people who keep your own chickens. There are currently over one million chicken owners in the UK.  This number is thought to have risen higher since Covid.

With spring and summer approaching it is the perfect time to introduce chickens to your garden but if you are serious about keeping chickens, then you must do some research. These are birds and they need care and attention. One of the best books to look at is The Haynes Chicken Manual.

You should also check the deeds/covenants of your property to make sure you are allowed to keep poultry.  Also might be worth checking with your neighbours to make sure they don’t have any issues with being neighbours with chickens!

Hens have three basic needs;
1. Secure, clean housing
2. Space
3. Food and water

With that, they will continue to produce eggs almost every day and provide hours of endless entertainment (and occasional frustration if you value your flower beds and your lawn)

All our paints are water based with low VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds), no odour or hidden nasties which makes them safe to use with all chickens as well as all other birds, bees, plants, animals and children.

With over 100 colours to choose from across our ranges there is bound to be a colour that works for you. Every colour has a sample pot, which is a great way to experiment with colours.  We recommend the following from our product range:

- Royal Exterior

- Wood Stain and Protect

- Timber Eco Shield

- Stable Coat

If you are looking for a new hen house. Look at Flyte So Fancy who have a wonderful selection.

The Hen house should be large enough for the chickens. The general rule is 1sq ft of house floor per bird in a house.  It should also have a large enough door for easy access to be able to reach inside and clean it.

‘Good housing is essential to keeping your hens secure and healthy. The hen house you choose should be substantial enough to withstand all weathers and, particularly, should protect them against predators’  Phill owner of Flyte So Fancy and chicken keeper for over 30 years.

The Handy 10 Hen house can house 10 birds comfortably. It has a little ramp for the chickens to get in and out easily and a large front door for easy access and cleaning and two wheels for easy movement around the garden. The back comes off for egg removal, but to stop squirrels or rabbits there are gravity catches to hold the lid on tight.

The one above has been painted in Royal Exterior Pale Pistachio and Olive Green. We think it looks stunning.
