Decking Stain Application Guide

A thin water-based stain that can be applied by brush, roller or High Volume Low Pressure sprayer.

After use remove excess product and clean brush, roller or sprayer components with warm water and detergent.

Decking suffer the most punishment from foot traffic, exposure to the elements, dirt and build up of algae due to being horizontal. This makes it even more essential to properly prepare the deck before application, sanding back to bare wood and making sure that it is fully clean and dry. By not doing this you will affect the performance of the product adversely affecting the life span before re-application is required and could cause peeling and cracking of the coating.

This product is a 2 coat application with a single coat required for future maintenance.

COVERAGE

1 litre will cover approximately 10m2 per coat depending on the moisture content and porosity of the surface. For the first treatment it is recommended that two coats be applied with only one coat needed for future maintenance and re-treatment. Additional coats will further enhance the colour and give more time before re-treatment is required.

SURFACE PREPARATION - STEP 1

Surfaces should be cleaned with warm water, detergent and a stiff brush. Make sure that all mould or algae is removed and rinse well. For best results previous treatments should be removed or well weathered. A proprietary deck cleaner and/or pressure washer should be used on new (or old) decking to remove existing chemicals. Ensure that timber is fully dry.

APPLICATION - STEP 2

Mix well before and during use. Protek Decking Stain can be applied by a pump-up garden sprayer, brush or roller. Brush on evenly along the grain. Apply second coat when the first coat has fully dried, approximately 4-12 hours. Drying time will depend on weather conditions being quicker on a hot dry day and longer in cold damp conditions. Maintain every 1 – 3 years or as required.

Splashes and drips can only be cleaned with warm water and detergent whilst still wet.

DO NOT apply in temperatures below 5oC or if wet weather is expected within 48 hours.

DO NOT apply to wet, damp or frozen timber.

DRYING TIME

Touch dry within 2 hours depending on drying conditions and humidity.
