Protek’s colours set a hard course

We are delighted to have been involved with Wilton Horse Trials in its fortieth year held on the last weekend of July. Organiser and course builder Anthony Ffooks visited Protek and was impressed with the large colour range on offer and how these would enhance his course. He used the Wood Stain and Protector to grand effect on the Wagon Fence, Fairey Wishing Well and even found the perfect skin tone in Royal Rose Pink for his rather large mermaid! The rustic fences were treated with the traditional Shed & Fence in Rosewood and complimentary Gold. Anthony said “I found that the great choice of vibrant colours were perfect for my Horse Trials jumps and were admired by everyone at the Event. The coverage and ease of use was fabulous”. We are increasing sales into the equestrian and animal housing market with our Stable Coat range that is animal friendly and easy to use alongside the vibrant colours in our other products.  We look forward to seeing what Anthony creates using our colours next year!

Mid Somerset Show Sunday August 21st 2016

Heavy morning rain clears for another spectacular show day. Protek once again sponsored the local Mid Somerset Show and were individually involved in as competitors, stewards, Vice Presidents and spectators.  It is a traditional one day agricultural show whose Main Ring entertains Hunters, Show Jumpers, Heavy Horses, Scurry racers and the prestigious Livestock Parade where the champion pigs, cattle and sheep compete for the Best in Show.

It is now a firm tradition that we leave work early to go and help set up for the pre-show party on Friday afternoon. Protek is part of a close rural community and the Mid Somerset show is a day to celebrate and appreciate local life whilst sampling some of its outstanding produce
As well as vintage vehicles and the hugely popular dog show the vast marques hold the South West Cheese Awards and the Somerset Cider Championship. Definitely something for everyone.
If you ever find yourself in Somerset on the 3rd Sunday in any August then come and join the Protekees at this special 160 year old show.

Are You Loving Your Garden?

Love your gardenWe certainly have been as the 2016 series of ‘Love Your Garden’ featured a wonderful array of Protek wood stains.

The team amazed us yet again with the most heart-warming and sometimes heart-breaking, collection of stories and delightful garden transformations. Caroline’s garden in episode 4 was a wonderful collection of garden rooms where Protek’s Whitewash in the Wood Stain & Protector range was used to decorate the Mutt Hut and show jump themed fencing and arch, with Royal Exterior Black being used to make a design statement of her garden building.

Love your gardenProtek’s Wood Stain & Protector range was also used in a variety of colours to create the beautiful and peaceful prayer pagoda in Hari’s garden seen in episode 3. A combination of Cornflower, Bristol Blue, Poppy and Primrose were combined skilfully to great effect with Francis using Primrose and Whitewash to create the floral stencil pattern on the flooring.

Another favourite was the cruise inspired theme in Rosie’s garden that contained some fantastic planting and inspirational ideas such as the roped tyre planters and amazing pirate play area that will be the envy of every child. Protek’s Royal Exterior in Porcelain Blue and Snow were used on the fencing to create a wavy sea effect with Somerset Blue and Snow being used on the coastal bench design.

We hope you’ve been inspired to get into your garden and see how creative you can get with Protek’s colours; and don’t forget to enter our Win with Wood competition!

This month's colours – AUGUST 2016

August’s colours come from inspiration for the seaside and hopefully lots of visits we are going to make this month. Subtle colours that could let the imagination run riot when painting garden furniture or even those tired terracotta pots..

All Afloat at Protek

Hampton Court Floating PontoonProtek’s retail wood stains have featured at another star-studded RHS garden show. RHS Hampton Court Palace selected Protek’s Decking Stain in Rustic Oak to refresh and rejuvenate the main floating pontoon that carries thousands of visitors across the water at the iconic RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show.

Following Floyd’s Climbers huge success at RHS Chelsea Flower Show Marcel once again chose Protek Royal Exterior wood finish to transform his stand at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show into a delightful country cottage theme. Marcel constructed planters and a picket fence to show off his specialist clematis and roses, using Royal Exterior in French Lilac and Somerset Blue to decorate them and upcycle an old bench.
Protek’s wood stains have also returned to the small screen as ITV1s ratings winner “Love Your Garden” used them again to create amazing garden makeovers. A wide variety of Protek’s colours from their Wood Stain & Protector and Royal Exterior ranges were used in all 6 episodes of the series.
Caroline from Protek says “It has been an honour to be part of the series again and this year they created a diverse range of incredible garden designs. I loved watching the presenters and gardening team members getting busy with our stains and particularly enjoyed watching Alan Titchmarsh painting terracotta pots using our Wood Stain & Protector tubs”.
Protek are now busily preparing for GLEE at the NEC where they will be exhibiting all of their products, merchandising and POS material at stand 20L32.

Show Season in Somerset

to The Bishop’s Palace in Wells Somerset to support their annual ‘English Country Garden Festival’Back in June we returned to The Bishop’s Palace in Wells Somerset to support their annual ‘English Country Garden Festival’.  It was great to meet so many interesting people from local area and a large number of international visitors.

This great event brings together some of the best local plant nurseries, specialist growers, local produce and a wide array of beautiful arts, crafts & garden sculptures.
We took the opportunity to showcase the new Restol Wood Oil range alongside our Royal Exterior wood finish range. Part of our display was a Storage Shed from Hutton Garden Products that we had madeover using Restol UV Natural Extra clear on the exterior walls, Dark Oak on the trims and floor and Whitewash on the interior walls. The shed drew a lot of attention with many people taking pictures of it, talking about it and stroking it!

Family Fun Day

Next year the festival will be held from the 9th to 11th June 2017 and in the meantime this year we are also sponsoring two fantastic local events.

Styling Homes & Gardens

Nikki and AlanI always love a good luck story and one of our customers, Nikki Hollier has a delightful one that has seen her transform her life. Dumping the desk for the design board, Nikki has won a Silver Award and People’s Choice Award for her first ever show garden at RHS Malvern 2016 and met the wonderful Alan Titchmarsh.

From IT Professional to award winning garden designer in a year
I had been working in the world of IT for the past 20 years but needed to follow my creative passion for colour, I was unsure where to start and how to change career direction.  So I enrolled at Pershore College of Horticulture and studied RHS in Horticulture part time for two years, just as something to do.  I had so much going on at home and in my professional life that it wasn’t my main focus, and after all I wasn’t going to become a horticulturist anyway, or so I thought!  Within a year of completing my exams I had moved house and given up my career and started my new business of home and garden makeovers.  Things had moved very quickly!
After starting my business, Styling Homes and Gardens, I realised very early on that my drawing skills needed some work – so I enrolled on a 10 week intensive garden design course, which I completed in November 2015.  Three weeks later I had submitted my designs to the RHS for my first show garden at the Malvern Spring Festival.  Within two months my application had been accepted!
RHS Malvern ShowI was assigned a Plant Mentor who told me “I started out in horticulture studying and working for the Royal Botanical Gardens in Edinburgh” which was closely followed by his resume of some highbrow horticultural establishments, and finished his comments with “it took eleven years before I created my first show garden”.  I wasn’t sure if he was implying that my very short tenure of two months at that point, was brave or stupid.
It’s a festival garden, which is aimed at newbies like me, so I thought!  After meeting all the other designers at a RHS conference in February 2016, I realised very quickly that I was the only one with limited horticultural experience.  There was no going back now, so I ensured I had the right team in place by recruiting a garden builder who had built show gardens before.  This was the best decision as he was invaluable in helping me through the myriad of rules and regulations set by the RHS.
The show garden build started at Malvern on Monday 11th April 2016 – it is a day I will never forget, not because it was a cold and miserable day, but because that was when I realised the gravitas of creating a show garden.  I was amongst some of the best, most creative and brilliant horticulturists I was ever likely to meet in one place.
By this point, you would have thought everything would have been in place to complete the project within the three week deadline – I’m a very organised person and it came as a bit of a shock that I had not ordered one plant by this stage but it wasn’t from lack of trying.  My landscaper was even more concerned about this prospect; after all it’s a plant show, not a landscaping show.  The main nursery I had been working with had let me down – not just me, but various other designers too.
However, every cloud has a silver lining and I found a fabulous nursery who understood the demands of RHS and supplied beautiful plants by the promised date.  Although, I still needed lots more plants – a show garden needs 30-40 plants per square metre and I had over 20 metres to fill.  I visited every garden centre and nursery in the vicinity searching for suitable plants.  It wasn’t easy, as all the best ones were allocated to the Chelsea Flower Show, but I did it and when my garden was judged, I gained my highest mark from the RHS judges for my planting.
You may have seen James Alexander Sinclair on TV at the Chelsea Flower Show talking about how the RHS judge the gardens and the criteria they use – it is the same for all RHS gardens whether it’s at Tatton Park, Hampton Court, Chelsea or Malvern.   I’m very proud to say not only did I win a silver medal, but I was also given the People’s Choice Award – which really was the icing on the cake, as it meant the public loved my garden, and after all they were my potential new employers.
So, it’s the start of my second year of business and I’m looking forward to working on new projects to help people create a harmonious home using great colour and fabulous paint from Protek Paints. I always recommend painting garden furniture, fences and sheds as not only does it protect it and extend the lifespan, but also provides year round colour, which is great in the dreary months just after Christmas.
